POST-PARTUM CARE

While your newborn might be your top priority, it is essential to see your gynaecologist and obstetrician after delivery for post-partum care. Understanding that maternal care after delivery is vital for happy and healthy mothers, children and families as a whole. Dr Jagiellowicz ensures that you are well taken care of after, and thus post-partum care visits serve as a transition to ongoing well-woman care and are individualised.

Post-partum care involves the following:

POST-PARTUM ASSESSMENTS

Post-partum assessments are started from 1 week after birth and continue up to 12 weeks after birth. From vaginal soreness to urinary problems, post-partum check-ups with Dr Jagiellowicz are there to ensure you are recovering well after delivery – be it vaginal birth or C-section, and that you are adjusting well to motherhood.

During post-partum care appointments, your obstetrician will ensure you are healing well and coping with the demands of your newborn baby. Nearly 70% of women describe at least one physical problem in the first 12 months of the post-partum period. Your obstetrician will assess your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing in terms of the following:

  • Physical recovery from birth
  • Sleep and fatigue
  • Health maintenance
  • Infant care and feeding
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Contraception and birth spacing
  • Lack of sexual desire
  • Urinary incontinence

As your obstetrician, Dr Jagiellowicz aims to ensure that you are in good health throughout your pregnancy and beyond, and your emotional wellbeing is part of that. After the birth of your baby, it is completely normal to feel overwhelmed and experience post-partum depression. Bringing a child into this world is a joyous occasion but does involve drastic life changes, coupled with sleep deprivation and feeding demands. Post-partum depression can cause new mothers to feel detached, depressed, worthless, hopeless and helpless. Baby-blues, more formally known as post-partum depression, is a mix of physical, emotional, and behavioural changes that affect new mothers within 4 weeks of delivering their little one. In fact, one in ten women will experience baby blues after the delivery of their baby. For this reason, these post-partum care appointments are also focused on the mother’s emotional and mental wellbeing. Dr Jagiellowicz will screen you for signs of post-partum depression. Post-partum depression medication may be prescribed to help manage and treat baby blues.
