CONTRACEPTION

No matter what stage of life you find yourself in, Dr Jagiellowicz can assist you with the contraception method that’s best for your lifestyle. While contraceptives can be used to prevent unintended pregnancy, some may also be prescribed to help manage hormones, regulate menstrual cycles, ease menstrual cramps, acne, PMS and the symptoms of various gynaecological conditions such as Endometriosis, Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

While contraceptives may be used to prevent unintended pregnancy, it is vital that patients understand how they do this, and thus Dr Jagiellowicz aims to inform and educate his patients on their reproductive health during these visits. Contraception hinders pregnancy by either separating the egg and sperm, preventing egg production or preventing the fertilised egg from attaching to the lining of the womb. During your gynaecology appointment with your gynaecologist, he will explain how contraception works, explain fertility awareness and the menstrual cycle’s role in pregnancy, as well as clear up any misunderstandings about sex and fertility.

There is a range of contraceptives to choose from, including:

  • Birth control pills
  • Barrier methods such as diaphragm or cervical cap, sponge, condoms and spermicides.
  • Injections
  • Rings placed inside the vagina for 3 weeks.
  • Rods/ implants which contains progestin and last for 3 years.
  • Patches that last for 4 weeks
  • Intra-uterine contraceptive devices such as the Implanon, Mirena, Kyleena or the Copper-T.

Condoms are also the only contraception method used to prevent pregnancy and protect against STDs and STIs. Since there is no one size fits all when it comes to contraceptives, your gynaecologist will be able to counsel you on the various types of contraception methods available and which may be best suited for your needs. It is important to understand that emergency contraception such as emergency contraceptive pills are not regular or normal contraception method of birth control. Emergency contraception is recommended for use after no birth control was used during sex.
