MINOR & MAJOR GYNAECOLOGICAL SURGERY
As a gynaecologist, Dr Jagiellowicz offers a wide variety of diagnostic, surgical and contraceptive procedures. These procedures may be done to reach an accurate diagnosis or to treat common gynaecological conditions like abnormal pap smears, heavy periods, urinary incontinence, or to place contraceptive devices. The following are common gynaecological surgeries:
HYSTEROSCOPY
A hysteroscopy is a non-surgical procedure done to examine the uterus and diagnose uterine problems, abnormal bleeding, infertility issues, or to remove intrauterine contraceptive devices. A hysteroscopy may also be done to treat adhesions, polyps and fibroids or a malformation (defect) of the uterus. During a hysteroscopy, a liquid is inserted into the cervix and womb by a thin tube-like instrument with a camera. This allows your gynaecologist to view the inside of the uterus and uterine lining with more clarity so that various gynaecological conditions can be diagnosed and treated.
COLPOSCOPY
A colposcopy is done to assess cervical abnormalities found during a pap smear and screen for cervical cancer. During a colposcopy procedure, a colposcope (which is a special magnifying instrument) is used to magnify and examine the cervix, vagina and vulva, finding the cause for abnormal cervical cells by taking samples of these cells.
DILATION AND CURETTAGE (D&C)
Dilation and curettage, commonly called a D&C, is another common gynaecological surgery done to diagnose uterine conditions, including uterine cancer or polyps, as well as endometrial hyperplasia. Dilation and Curettage (D&C) is done by taking a sample of the endometrium, the lining of the uterus, with suction or a sharp curette. A D&C is typically performed when an endometrial biopsy is not possible or if the sample of the tissue was inadequate.
PELVIC LAPAROSCOPY
Pelvic laparoscopy is a surgical procedure done under general anaesthesia using only small incisions in the belly button or lower abdomen to operate. A laparoscopy procedure makes use of a thin, tube-like instrument with a camera and light at the end to visualise and operate on the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and surrounding tissue, minimally invasively.
ENDOMETRIAL ABLATION
Endometrial ablation is a procedure done as an alternative to a hysterectomy and to stop or reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, using either heat or cold energy to destroy the endometrial lining of the uterus. Endometrial ablation is done for women who no longer wish to become pregnant and are looking for a permanent option.
HYSTERECTOMY
A hysterectomy is a permanent option for women who no longer wish to fall pregnant. It is done to remove the unhealthy uterus but may also involve the removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other surrounding structures. A hysterectomy may be done laparoscopically, vaginally or by an open incision, under general anaesthesia.
